James Connolly - One of the 7 Signatories of the Irish Proclamation of Independence in 1916

JAMES CONNOLLY
1868-1916

A Scottish-born socialist and Trade Union activist, Connolly co-founded the Irish Citizen Army to defend workers’ rights after the 1913 Lockout.

He was one of the seven signatories to the Proclamation of Independence and was military commander in charge of the GPO Garrison.

In Kilmainham Gaol on May 12th he was executed while strapped to a chair due to injuries he sustained in the Rising.
